Cooktops can vary in size, but there are some standards. Most cooktops are standard in width as either 30" or 36", but can be larger. The size is the most important aspect of a built-in appliance whether it is for replacement or so the kitchen designer orders the correct cabinet. Both the overall width and depth as well as the cutout dimensions are important measurements when selecting or reporting cooktop specifications.

The second option after finding the correct size is whether is it gas or electric. It is important to remember that even gas cooktops require a regular 120V outlet. If downdraft ventilation is in question, almost every cooktop can except a pop-up vent, and some cooktops have built-in downdrafts.
